House at Orient Point

House at Orient Point is a ground-up beach house designed for a couple in Orient, NY. Inspired by Mies’ 50x50 house, the design provides an immersive, indoor-outdoor escape for two avid collectors just a short distance from New York City.

Organized around a central staircase, elevator, and wood-clad veneer core, the main living area is encased in floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping panoramic views of the Peconic Bay and surrounding estuary. Situated on columns above the FEMA flood plain of coastal NY, the house provides two tiers of occupiable space for entertainment or private reflection.

The ground floor and surrounding landscape provide an entryway that embraces the incomplete and unenclosed experience of the coast. Moderately reflective basalt flooring and dark veneer frame the couple’s collection of chromatic Italian sculptures and furniture.
